Governor Schwarzenegger Signs Legislation to Double Traffic Fines on Two San Francisco Road Segments

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 1419 by Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) today designating two road segments in the city and county of San Francisco as double fine zones. The two road segments designated are State Route 1 (19th Avenue) between Junipero Serra Boulevard and Lake Street, and State Route 101 between Golden Gate Avenue and Lyon Street.

“Public safety is my top priority and it is critical that we continue to ensure the safety of everyone on our roadways,” said Governor Schwarzenegger.  “This bill will help do just that on two dangerous roads in San Francisco.”

In addition, the bill requires Caltrans to conduct and submit a study to determine if further criteria for pedestrian safety in future double-fine zones is needed.

Each year Californians travel more than 300 billion miles on our state's roadways.  Although most of these trips end safely, many result in serious accidents.  Each year, traffic collisions on California's streets and highways account for more than 4,000 fatalities and 300,000 injuries.  Those numbers are staggering, as each represents a tragedy that could possibly have been prevented.
