Secretary
Rosario Marín:
Hi,
this is Rosario Marín, Secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency,
filling in for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.
Earlier
this week, I was proud to join the Governor as he hosted the XXVI Border
Governors Conference in Hollywood.
This annual meeting is a great
opportunity for the 10 U.S.
and Mexican border states to collaborate on the big issues affecting our
region.
The
theme of this year's conference was Building Green Economies.
We
held forums with Nobel Laureates and other environmental experts.
At a
Green Tech Expo we saw electric cars, solar-powered flashlights, non-toxic
cleaning products and other innovative technologies that will help us protect our
environment and our economy.
The
governors also signed a declaration to work together on important issues such
as agriculture, education, economic development, border security and
infrastructure.
They
agreed to create a council of advisors for economic development.
They
are developing a compact among all ten border states for mutual aid in disaster responses.
And
they are working to reduce the environmental damage caused by millions of scrap
tires scattered along the border.
Governor
Schwarzenegger also wants to change people's perceptions of that region.
When
many people think of the border they think only of illegal immigration, drugs,
crime and human trafficking.
But
the Governor also wants people to know about the positive stories.
He
wants you to know that Mexico is California's number one trading partner and that Mexican tourists
contribute billions of dollars to our economy.
That
if the ten U.S. and Mexican border states were one nation its economy would be
the 3rd largest in the world.
And he
wants you to know about the great friendship and cooperation that exists
between our governments.
Last
month, for example when California was battling 2,000 fires, President Calderón
called the Governor at 2 a.m. while on a flight to Japan to offer assistance just as we reached out to Mexico during recent flooding in Tabasco.
Like
the Governor says, we are proving we can and must be more than just neighbors.
We
must also be partners and work together to solve our common challenges and lift
up all our people.
On

A
principios de la semana tuve el orgullo de unirme con el Gobernador quien fue
el anfitrión de la vigésima sexta conferencia de gobernadores fronterizos en
Hollywood.
Esta
reunión anual es una gran oportunidad para que los diez estados estadounidense
y de México, colaboren sobre los grandes temas que están afectando a
nuestra región.
El tema de
esta conferencia fue la "Construcción de Economías Verdes."
Organizamos
foros con laureados del premio Nobel y otros expertos del medio ambiente.
En el Expo
de Tecnologías Verdes vimos carros eléctricos, linternas solares, productos sin
ingredientes tóxicos, y otras tecnologías innovadoras que nos ayudara a
proteger a nuestro medio ambiente y nuestra economía.
El
Gobernador también firmó una declaración conjunta para trabajar en temas
importantes como la agricultura, educación, desarrollo económico y seguridad
fronteriza e infraestructura.
Se pusieron
de acuerdo para crear un consejo de asesores para tratar el tema del desarrollo
económico.
Están
desarrollando un acuerdo entre los diez estados fronterizos para la ayuda
mutual en cuanto la respuesta a desastres.
También
están trabajando para reducir daños medioambientales causados por millones de
llantas desechadas a lo largo de la región fronteriza.
El
Gobernador Schwarzenegger también quiere cambiar las percepciones que la gente
tiene sobre la región.
Cuando
mucha gente piensa de la frontera, solo piensan en los temas de inmigración,
drogas, crimen y el tráfico de humanos.
Pero el
Gobernador también quiere que la gente se entere de las historias positivas.
El quiere
que tú reconozcas que México es el principal compañero de comercio de
California y que los turistas Mexicanos contribuyen miles de millones de
dólares a nuestra economía.
Si los diez
estados fronterizos de los Estados Unidos y México fueran una nación, su
economía sería la tercera más grande del mundo.
Y quiere
que reconozcas la gran amistad y cooperación que existe entre nuestros
gobiernos.
Por
ejemplo, el mes pasado, cuando California estaba luchando contra los 2,000
incendios, el Presidente Calderón llamo al Gobernador a las dos de la mañana,
mientras viajaba al Japón para ofrecer asistencia, igual como nosotros le
ofrecimos a México durante las recientes inundaciones en Tabasco.
Como dice
el Gobernador, nosotros estamos demostrando que podemos y debemos ser más que
solamente vecinos.
También
debemos ser compañeros y trabajar juntos para resolver nuestros desafíos y
elevar a toda nuestra gente.
