Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints Denise Carter as District V Colusa County Supervisor

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Denise J. Carter to the Colusa County Board of Supervisors, representing District V.

"Denise's management and volunteer experience make her the ideal person to serve in this position," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "For years she has worked to improve her community and I am confident that she will continue to serve and implement the needs of the people of Colusa County,"

Since 1993, Carter has co-owned Benden Farms, a diversified family farm that grows organic rice and beans. She serves as the financial manager of the farm and assists in the farm's daily operations. Prior to that, she worked for Texaco for 15 years where she served as a planning and marketing representative from 1986 to 1993, planning analyst from 1985 to 1986, project engineer from 1983 to 1985 and engineer from 1978 to 1983.

"I am excited to serve on the board of supervisors with honesty and integrity," said Denise Carter. "I look forward to using this opportunity to not only serve the people of Colusa County but to also address the important issues facing our community,"

Carter, 52, of Colusa, has served as 2nd vice president of the Colusa County Farm Bureau. Additionally, she serves as the director of the Colusa Glenn Watershed Group. Carter is a member and currently serves as chapter president of the North Valley Chapter of the California Certified Organic Farmers. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $28,800. Carter is a Republican.

The Colusa County Board of Supervisors is the elected body representing the people of Colusa County. There are five districts that elect the five person board of supervisors. District V represents the city of Colusa and the unincorporated area of Princeton.

Pursuant to California Government Code § 25060, the Governor has the appointing authority to fill a vacancy on a county board of supervisors until the next general election cycle. The appointee of the Governor must be an elector of the district which he/she will represent for 30 days immediately preceding the appointment and reside in the district during his/her incumbency. The appointee will hold office until the election and qualification of a successor with such election to be held at the next general election unless the term would expire in January following such general election.  When a vacancy continues from the failure of the person elected to succeed the appointee to qualify for office, the Governor's appointee holds for the unexpired term.

The District V seat was vacated by Supervisor Daniel Yerxa.
