Gov. Schwarzenegger Applauds Adoption of World’s First-Ever Low Carbon Fuel Standard
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
today issued the following statement on the California Air Resources Board's
adoption of the world's first-ever Low Carbon Fuel Standard to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and transform the fuel supply toward cleaner fuels:
"California's first-in-the-world Low Carbon Fuel Standard
will not only reduce global warming pollution - it will reward innovation,
expand consumer choice and encourage the private investment we need to
transform our energy infrastructure. Embraced already by 16 states and with
support from President Obama and members of Congress for a national standard,
we are on the path toward energy security and a low carbon future."
In 2007, the
Governor announced the Low Carbon Fuel
Standard for transportation fuels that requires fuel providers to reduce the carbon
intensity of transportation fuels sold in California. This first-of-its-kind
standard firmly establishes sustainable demand for lower carbon fuels without
favoring one fuel over another. To start, the standard will reduce the carbon
intensity of California's passenger vehicle fuels by at least 10 percent by
2020 and more thereafter.
