January 2009, as "California Dried Plum Digestive Health Month"

One of the most important things we can do to ensure our bodies are strong is to eat a healthy diet.  Fruits provide us with important vitamins, and one delicious way you can meet your recommended servings is through eating dried plums.

Dried plums are a great source of vital nutrients and contribute to a healthy digestive system.  They are high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, as well as potassium, vitamin K and boron, which are involved in bone metabolism.  They also provide us with polyphenols, antioxidants that may protect DNA against damage, decrease inflammation and prevent cancer.

Additionally, dried plums are important to our state's agricultural success.  Ninety-nine percent of dried plums from the United States are grown in California, and we produce over half of the world's supply. 

There are many health and economic benefits from dried plums, and I encourage Californians to incorporate them into their meals.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 2009, as "California Dried Plum Digestive Health Month."
