Governor Brown Issues Proclamation Declaring National Preparedness Month

9-5-2014

SACRAMENTO - Calling on all Californians to get emergency ready, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued a proclamation declaring September "National Preparedness Month" in the State of California. The proclamation comes just two weeks after the South Napa Earthquake and coincides with Saturday's 6th annual "California Day of Preparedness" hosted by the Governor's Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento.

More information on California Day of Preparedness events tomorrow can be found here. The text of the proclamation is below:

PROCLAMATION

History shows that disasters often strike without warning and that preparedness on the part of individuals, businesses and communities can do much to mitigate the devastating effects of such events. This year marks the 20th and 25th anniversaries of the Northridge and Loma Prieta earthquakes, respectively, and in less than a week we will commemorate the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These historic disasters as well as the recent South Napa earthquake and the wildfires, flash floods and drought conditions we have experienced this year should serve as reminders that we must always be prepared.

Beginning a decade ago, as part of an effort to encourage personal preparedness for emergencies, the Federal Emergency Management Agency proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month. Since then, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, other state agencies, local agencies, businesses and community organizations in California have joined in the effort to promote personal, employee and community preparedness by conducting preparedness fairs and other events during the month of September.

Today, I urge all Californians to continue their vigilance and increase their efforts to make our families, communities, state and nation better prepared for disasters.
NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim September 2014, as "National Preparedness Month."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 4th day of September 2014.
