Governor Brown Issues Proclamation Declaring Tsunami Preparedness Week

3-21-2016

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued a proclamation declaring March 20 through 26, 2016, as Tsunami Preparedness Week in the State of California.

The text of the proclamation is below:

PROCLAMATION

March 27, 2016, marks the 52nd anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami, an event that caused twelve deaths in Crescent City and millions of dollars in damage to California’s ports, harbors and coastal communities. On March 11, 2011, a tsunami generated by the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake off the coast of Japan was so powerful that it caused tremendous devastation to Japan including the loss of 15,000 lives and damage to the country’s infrastructure. This tsunami caused damage throughout the Pacific, including to California, and caused one death.

These historic disasters, as well as other tsunami and earthquake events, should serve as reminders that we need always to be prepared. As part of the effort to prepare for tsunamis, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, California Geological Survey, state and federal agencies, local agencies, businesses, educational institutions and community organizations have contributed to emergency preparedness efforts. These entities will commemorate National Tsunami Preparedness Week from March 20 through March 26, 2016, by conducting exercises, testing warning systems and response plans.

Today, I urge all Californians to continue their vigilance and increase their efforts to make our families, communities, state and nation better prepared for disasters including tsunamis.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 20-26, 2016, as “Tsunami Preparedness Week.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 18th day of March 2016.
