Governor Schwarzenegger Offers Reward for Information in the Murder of Ornella Maccari

WHEREAS, on April 18, 2003, 18-year-old Ornella Maccari was found strangled to death in an unincorporated area of North Orange County; her purse and other personal property are believed to have been taken from her by her attacker(s) and have never been recovered; and WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff's Department has pursued and exhausted all investigative leads and to date Ornella's murder remains unsolved; and WHEREAS, Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona has asked that a state reward be offered to encourage individuals with information about this murder to contact law enforcement; and WHEREAS, the Maccari family supports the issuance of such reward; and WHEREAS, public awareness and assistance is vital to law enforcement, and rewards often encourage public cooperation essential to apprehend those who have committed serious offenses; and WHEREAS, the Governor is authorized by Penal Code section 1547(a) to offer rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person who has committed, or is charged with the commission of, an offense punishable by death; and WHEREAS, the reward will be paid in accordance with Penal Code section 1547. NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby offer, effective immediately, a reward in the amount of $50,000 for new information, voluntarily given hereafter, leading to the arrest and conviction in a California court of the person or persons who committed or is/are charged with the commission of an offense punishable by death for the murder of Ornella Maccari.
