Governor Newsom Announces Appointments 2.6.19

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the following appointments:

Mary Wheat, 52, of Elk Grove, has been appointed chief deputy director at the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, where she has served as deputy director of enforcement since 2017. She was assistant director in the Filing Division at the California Franchise Tax Board from 2014 to 2017. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $153,876. Wheat is a Democrat.

Louis Paulson, 60, of Walnut Creek, has been appointed to the Public Employment Relations Board. Paulson was president of the California Professional Firefighters from 2004 to 2018. He was fire captain for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District from 1993 to 2012 and president of Contra Costa County Firefighters Local 1230 from 1995 to 2004. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $153,689. Paulson is a Democrat.

Art Pulaski, 66, of Berkeley, has been reappointed to the State Compensation Insurance Fund Board of Directors, where he has served since 2018. Pulaski has served as executive secretary treasurer and chief officer of the California Labor Federation since 1996 and president of the California Works Foundation since 2000. He was president of the Labor Project for Working Families from 1990 to 2000 and PBS series “We Do the Work” from 1991 from 1997. Pulaski was founder of PalCare from 1989 to 1996 and executive secretary of the San Mateo Central Labor Council from 1984 to 1996. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $58,633. Pulaski is a Democrat.

Angie Tate, 50, of Sacramento, has been reappointed to the State Compensation Insurance Fund Board of Directors, where she has served since 2018. Tate has been principal at Burton and the Brains since 2018 and has been chief financial officer for the California Democratic Party since 2009. She was finance director for California State Senator John Burton from 1998 to 2009. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $58,633. Tate is a Democrat.

Michael Allen, 72, of Santa Rosa, has been appointed to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Allen served as an Assemblymember and Assistant Majority Leader in the California State Assembly from 2011 to 2012. He was a district director for Senator Patricia Wiggins in the California State Senate from 2004 to 2008, executive director at the Service Employees’ International Union Local 707 from 1980 to 2004 and a psychiatric registered nurse at the County of Sonoma Mental Health Department from 1975 to 1980. Allen earned a Juris Doctor degree from Empire College School of Law. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $153,689. Allen is a Democrat.
