Tuesday: In Southern California, Governor Newsom to Highlight How Cities & Counties Can be Important Partners in Addressing California’s Housing Shortage

Following his call in last week’s State of the State address, Governor Newsom will offer the state’s assistance to California mayors in meeting state housing requirements

LONG BEACH — In Southern California tomorrow, Governor Gavin Newsom will highlight how the state is partnering with California cities and counties to address the state’s housing cost crisis.

Last week in his State of the State address, Governor Newsom called on cities and counties across the state to do their part to address California’s housing crisis. In his speech, he lifted up local leaders who are going above and beyond to meet housing demand and highlighted the $1.7 billion in major assistance and incentives that his budget would provide to municipalities that plan and zone for housing production. The Governor also offered the state’s assistance to cities whose housing plans are currently in violation of California housing law — all while acknowledging that cities whose plans remain out of compliance will be held to account.

Tomorrow, the Governor and Mayor Robert Garcia will tour an affordable housing development in Long Beach, one of the cities that is working hard to help address the housing needs in the region. The site, a 27-acre supportive housing community that provides temporary, transitional and permanent affordable housing for veterans, families, youth and children, serves more than 1,000 individuals on any given day.

After the event, Governor Newsom will then host a meeting with mayors of cities whose housing plans are currently out of compliance with state law, as he described in his State of the State address last week. There he will offer the state’s support in helping each of the cities come into compliance. Joining the Governor will be top staff from the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency as well as the Department of Housing and Community Development to assist the mayors in attendance and address their specific questions and concerns.
