Governor Newsom Statement on Retirement of CSU Chancellor White

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom issued the below statement today following California State University (CSU) Chancellor Timothy P. White’s announcement that he will retire next year:

“There are few institutions that serve people at the scale of the California State University, and few leaders anywhere with the impact and tenacity of Chancellor Tim White. I had the privilege of working in partnership with Chancellor White while on the CSU Board of Trustees, where I saw his commitment to closing our state’s persistent opportunity and achievement gaps up close. Stewarding one of the nation’s largest and most diverse systems of higher education, Chancellor White built new pathways for historic numbers of students to walk across the stage at graduation. During his tenure, we have seen CSU graduation rates at an all-time high for first-time and transfer students, putting the system on a trajectory to exceed the System’s goals for 2025. His relentless focus on helping students graduate has not only changed lives but is transforming entire communities, showing us all what is possible when we aim high on behalf of the next generation of Californians. I am grateful to Chancellor White for his tireless service to California, and I wish him all the best in retirement.”
