TOMORROW: Governor Newsom to Unleash Hundreds of Millions in Emergency Homelessness Aid for Cities & Counties

Governor Newsom also to travel to San Diego and meet with Governors from Baja California States to Re-Establish “Commission of the Californias”

LOMA LINDA and SAN DIEGO – Governor Gavin Newsom will make a major funding announcement on homelessness tomorrow at the Loma Linda Veterans’ Village. The Village is an 87-unit affordable apartment community for low‐income veterans and their families. The site was developed, in part, with a California Housing and Community Development Department Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Loan.

In September, the Governor signed 13 bills into law building on the state’s historic $1 billion investment in the 2019 Budget Act. The budget provided $650 million to local governments for emergency homelessness aid. That same month, Governor Newsom called on the Trump administration to increase federal investments in housing options for people experiencing homelessness and requested 50,000 additional Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs) and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers. In July, Governor Newsom announced regional leaders and statewide experts who will advise his Administration on solutions to address the state’s homelessness epidemic.

Later tomorrow, in San Diego, Governor Newsom, Baja California Norte Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez and Baja California Sur Governor Carlos Mendoza Davis will sign an MOU to reestablish the Commission of the Californias (ComCal).

Originally established on June 25, 1964 by former California Governor Edmund “Pat” Brown and former Baja California Governor Eligio Esquivel Mendez, ComCal is a forum for the three states to share information around common issues and discuss the development of common solutions. In 1968, Baja California Sur joined the commission during the tenure of former California Governor Ronald Reagan. In 2004, the Commission was dissolved by former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
