OAKLAND – Governor Gavin Newsom traveled to Oakland today, continuing his meetings with community and business leaders across California on racism, systemic injustice and how the demonstrations across the state and country are fueling important reforms. The Governor met with leaders from local community organizations, including Akonadi Foundation President Lateefah Simon, to discuss new policing and criminal justice reforms the state is pursuing, and persistent educational, economic and health inequities impacting the community.
The Governor also visited Miss Ollie’s, a Black-owned business, with Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Cathy Adams.
On Friday, after a week of engagement with civic, community, youth and faith leaders and law enforcement in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, Governor Newsom announced his support for new policing and criminal justice reforms. He committed to working toward a statewide standard for policing peaceful protests and ending the carotid hold. This announcement builds on the work California did last year to enact the nation’s strongest standard for police use of deadly force.
