Governor Newsom Statement on Sandy Hook Anniversary

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement today on the 10th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting:

“A decade after the horrific slaughter of 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary, we hold in our hearts the brave survivors and families who carry on in the face of unspeakable loss and trauma.

“Sandy Hook shook our nation to its core, yet every day new tragedies play out in our schools, churches, workplaces and public spaces across the country – destroying countless lives and tearing at the soul of our nation.

“This has to stop. We cannot accept this as our reality and we cannot remain silent. California will continue to lead the charge to end this epidemic and protect our kids. We owe it to them and to all the lives devastated by senseless gun violence to keep fighting.”

California’s gun safety policies save lives and provide a national model for other states. California was ranked as the top state in the nation for gun safety by the Giffords Law Center in 2021, and the state saw a 37 percent lower gun death rate than the national average that year. As a result of the actions taken by the state, Californians are 25 percent less likely to die in a mass shooting compared to people in other states.
