Governor Newsom appoints new Government Operations Secretary

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the appointment of Nick Maduros as Secretary of California’s Government Operations Agency. Outgoing Secretary Amy Tong will continue to lead the administration’s efforts on improving government efficiencies and driving innovative government solutions.

“Nick brings a committed, efficient, and forward-thinking approach that builds on Amy’s successful efforts that streamlined government services and reduced costs. I am grateful for Nick’s dedicated leadership, and look forward to his partnership in driving innovation for the dreamers and doers of this state.

“I am deeply grateful to Secretary Tong and her two-decade-plus career in state service improving the lives of Californians through some of the states’ most challenging moments. I look forward to her continued guidance to streamline government by leveraging emerging technology and improving public engagement.”

Maduros previously held the position of Director at the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, where he administered over 40 tax and fee programs which generated more than $96 billion in revenue last fiscal year. During his tenure at the department, CDTFA has cut the cost to administer a dollar of revenue by more than 28% while improving taxpayer service.

Nick Maduros, of Davis, has been appointed Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency. Maduros has been Director of the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration since 2017. Maduros was Chief of Staff at the United States Small Business Administration from 2014 to 2017. He was President at Delta Policy Group from 2010 to 2014. Maduros was Director and Partner at Quinn Gillespie and Associates from 2000 to 2010. He was an Associate at Arnold and Porter from 1998 to 2000. Maduros earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Yale University. The position requires Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $247,039. Maduros is a Democrat.
