Governor Newsom statement on Trump administration freezing of critical research dollars to UCLA
What you need to know: The Trump administration has frozen nearly $200 million in federal grants to UCLA used for critical science and health research.
Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement today in response to the Trump Justice Department’s announcement that they are suspending nearly $200 million in research grants, through the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other agencies, to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
“Freezing critical research funding for UCLA – dollars that were going to study invasive diseases, cure cancer, and build new defense technologies – makes our country less safe. It is a cruel manipulation to use Jewish students’ real concerns about Antisemitism on campus as an excuse to cut millions of dollars in grants that were being used to make all Americans safer and healthier. This is the action of a president who doesn’t care about students, Californians, or Americans who don’t comply with his MAGA ways.”

UCLA has been consistently ranked the #1 Public University in America by U.S. News & World Report.
