ICYMI: California kicks off celebrations marking its 175th year of statehood!
SACRAMENTO – Yesterday, California officially marked the beginning of its 175th anniversary of statehood with festivities honoring the Golden State’s history, people, and spirit of innovation. The day began with the First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom cutting cake at the California State Library, followed by a block party hosted by California State Parks capped by Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tem Mike McGuire and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas starting a laser show that stretched from the State Capitol to the Tower Bridge.
Centering history and community
At the California State Library, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom joined State Librarian Greg Lucas for a celebratory cake cutting to commemorate California’s milestone anniversary. With more than 1,000 libraries across the state, the moment underscored California’s enduring commitment to community, learning, and connection.
What better way to celebrate the historic day than with music, food, and lights?
From 6 to 9 p.m., the free public block party brought Californians together with music, food trucks, birthday cake, and California-grown treats, alongside hands-on history activities for all ages led by State Parks staff. Guests stepped back in time with State Parks volunteers dressed in period attire, sharing stories of Admission Day and the Capitol’s legacy.
The evening concluded with a breathtaking laser show designed by Tim Anderson of Nu-Salt Laser International – known for the Sacramento Kings’ “Beam” – and Ben Davis of Illuminate, the visionary behind The Bay Lights. As a nod to the invention of lasers in the state and California’s entry as the 31st state in the Union, thirty-one Laser Space Cannons lit up the night sky.
