Governor Newsom on Republicans’ failed attempt to silence voters

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom today issued the following statement in response to the three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ruling against California Republicans. The group of California Republicans attempted to nullify a congressional map California voters approved last November to counter Trump’s rigging of the Texas Congressional Map to favor Republicans in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. The U.S. Department of Justice also joined California Republicans in attempting to block Proposition 50 from taking effect.

Republicans’ weak attempt to silence voters failed. California voters overwhelmingly supported Prop 50 – to respond to Trump’s rigging in Texas – and that is exactly what this court concluded.

“Californians overwhelmingly voted in favor of Proposition 50. Today’s decision upholds the will of the people. It also means that, to date, every single challenge against Proposition 50 has failed,” said Attorney General Bonta. “I couldn’t be prouder of my team for successfully defending this ballot initiative in court on behalf of Governor Newsom and Secretary of State Weber. We remain confident in the legality of Proposition 50.”
