Governor Newsom continues advocacy for LA recovery funding in Washington, DC

What you need to know: In DC, Governor Newsom met with members of California’s Congressional delegation, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and other members of Congress to discuss Los Angeles wildfire recovery, Republican’s assault on voting rights, and efforts to defend immigrant communities.

WASHINGTON, DC — Governor Gavin Newsom today was on Capitol Hill, meeting with congressional leaders to discuss Los Angeles wildfire recovery, Republicans’ assault on voting rights, and the economic fallout from Donald Trump’s illegal tariffs and war with Iran.

This week I met with members of Congress and federal partners to advocate for supplemental recovery funding for last January’s Los Angeles firestorms. Survivors have made one thing clear: the cost of rebuilding is the biggest obstacle. California has always stepped up for this country in moments of crisis. Now we need the President and Congress to step up for the people of Los Angeles.

The Governor met with New Jersey Senator Andy Kim, who serves on the Homeland Security Committee overseeing FEMA, where they discussed LA’s recovery as well as healthcare, foreign policy, and voting rights. The Governor then met with members of the California Congressional Delegation — including Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff, Representative Brad Sherman, Representative Judy Chu, and Representative George Whitesides — and held additional conversations with members throughout the afternoon, including Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock and Delaware Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester.

In the afternoon, Governor Newsom joined the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) for a roundtable discussion focused on defending immigrant communities, protecting voting rights, and pushing back against MAGA-led efforts to dismantle minority representation through redistricting. The Governor and CHC members also discussed ongoing wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles and the urgent need for Congress to deliver long-term recovery funding to impacted communities.

This builds on the Governor’s efforts yesterday, which included meeting with U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to discuss wildfire recovery efforts and funding in Los Angeles, including ongoing contamination in the federally managed Tijuana River between San Diego County and Mexico. And meeting with House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to discuss the ongoing threats to democracy and voting rights.
