Governor, First Partner statement on the passing of Gloria Steinem

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued the following statement today on the passing of Gloria Steinem, feminist, writer, and advocate:

“Gloria Steinem was a force of nature. She was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and human rights, and a deeply empathetic leader and friend. She fought to create a world where everyone could be themselves, where who you were does not define what you can be.

“Gloria marched with farmworkers, stood with civil rights leaders, and ensured that the feminist movement extended to all women, including women of color, lesbians, working women, and younger women. She never stopped learning, never stopped evolving, and always, always looked to the future with hope and with determination.

“Gloria’s leadership was rooted in community, welcoming everyone under her tent of mentorship and advocacy. She will be remembered as one of the most iconic and impactful leaders of our time. She inspired both of us and countless people around the world, and we were lucky enough to call her a friend. She will be missed.”
