Governor Newsom signs bills as Los Angeles readies for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games

LOS ANGELES — At Exposition Park in front of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation building on the state’s support of Los Angeles’ preparations for the upcoming 2028 Games after a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup. Today’s effort provides crucial support for the city and county to continue their preparations for welcoming the world, supports key public safety partnerships, and helps student-athletes competing in the world games.
The $7 million in new investment announced today adds to the $96.5 million investment earlier this summer to upgrade and modernize Exposition Park, a historic venue set to become the first ever to host three different Summer Olympic Games. This investment also builds on infrastructure improvements announced earlier this year.
The Golden State is in the middle of a historic run of sporting events, and these bills allow the state the ability to continue to deliver for fans and athletes alike — all across the world.

AB 2411 (McKinnor) — Requires Cal OES to negotiate and enter into agreements with state, local, and out-of-state law enforcement agencies regarding temporary deployment to support the public safety demands of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Establishes a temporary certification and training program through the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for out-of-state law enforcement personnel assisting with security during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

AB 2436 (Fong) — Extends the current exemption allowing Team USA student athletes training in California to receive resident tuition classification.

AB 191 — Implements temporary statutory amendments to ensure the successful and timely delivery of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to meet the unique operational demands of this global event .

The estimated economic output for the LA28 games are projected at: $20.5 billion to $40.6 billion in total economic output; 126,000 to 224,000 jobs supported; $8.9 billion to $15.6 billion in labor income; and $15.4 billion to $24.0 billion in value added GDP.
