Housing & homelessness
Here’s how we are tackling homelessness and building more housing.
Holding cities and counties accountable
Governor Newsom has transformed California’s approach to housing and homelessness. His Administration has directed billions to address these issues. But with more resources comes greater accountability at the local level. New regional plans now direct communities to commit to solutions that reduce homelessness.
Getting and keeping more people in housing
Programs like Roomkey and Homekey have helped thousands of Californians. They rapidly turned hotels, motels, and other existing properties into housing. The administration is also clearing dangerous encampments while offering a path home. We’ve invested millions so that those living in tents can move to housing with access to support.
Building more housing, faster
The Governor has speeded up the building of housing. To do this, he cut red tape, streamlined approvals, and invested over $40 billion. He also set a legally binding goal of 2.5 million homes planned within the next six years. To meet this goal, his Administration launched the Housing Accountability Unit. He has also worked with the Legislature to:
- open excess state land for housing development,
- sign landmark eviction protections, and
- sign rent caps into law.
